Restoration of the Principal Doors of the Basilica

Restoration of the Principal Doors of the Basilica

Restoration works are currently being carried out on the three main doors at the west end of the Basilica under the portico, focusing on their careful stripping, repair, and varnishing, together with the conservation of their associated lettering and decorative studwork.

Over time, the doors had become worn due to exposure to the elements and regular use. The restoration process involves the delicate removal of old layers of varnish and accumulated grime, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to re-emerge. Any areas of damage are being expertly repaired to ensure both structural integrity and visual harmony.

Particular attention is also being given to the original lettering and metal studwork, which are being cleaned, treated, and preserved to retain their historic character and detail.

Once completed, these works will not only protect the doors for years to come but also restore their dignity and craftsmanship, enhancing the overall appearance and welcoming presence of the Basilica. The Fondazzjoni Bazilika Kristu Re is grateful to the LESA for their kind funding of this project.
